"Family of Origin" is the term used in counseling work to refer to the relational systems into which we were born and raised. Our families of origin leave lasting impacts on us all. They are the source of so many of our most basic ways of thinking, feeling, and behaving.

A crucial step in healing for all people is to gain an awareness of our families of origin. This awareness takes us outside our biased perspective as participants and gives us the view of an outside, unbiased observer.

When we come to see our families of origin more clearly, we also see more clearly our own identity, strengths, challenges, drives, and defenses. With this awareness, we can unlock a sense of freedom from old patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving that have kept us imprisoned our whole lives long.

How does one begin healing from family of origin trauma?

In the final portion of the webinar, Dr. Jake will share the ways people can begin to find freedom from old, dysfunctional patterns.

From the desk of Dr. Jake...

In my own recovery work, nothing was as powerful as when I addressed head on issues related to my family of origin.

This was especially significant to me because I came from a great family! I hear horror stories every week in my office about parents who perpetrated terrible abuse and neglect. That wasn't my story. I was blessed with good parents who I continue to have a warm, loving relationship with today. However, that didn't exempt me from childhood wounds and trauma that have had a lasting effect into my adult years.

Each year I do a handful of intensives in which I lead adults through the sacred work of discerning and processing through the early wounds they received and messages they believed about themselves. Hearing these stories is truly a holy experience and an honor. Even more awe-inspiring is seeing these individuals courageously confront the lies and defenses they've relied on for decades, let them go, and emerge ready to live vulnerable, authentic lives.

Family of origin work is important for those who have struggled with addiction because, as research has consistently shown, many of the issues that lead to addiction begin in early childhood or even infancy.

Partners of addicts also often benefit from family of origin work after they have received some safety and stabilization from the discovery of their betrayal. Why? Because trauma in adulthood can awake dormant traumas from decades before.

I hope you will join me for this important webinar in which I will give an introduction to family of origin work. My hope is it gives you insight into your own story and courage to take steps toward your own freedom to move forward in peace.
