From the desk of Dr. Jake...
Nearly every client I've ever worked with has needed help knowing how to ground themselves after feeling triggered. This shouldn't be surprising. Most of know the experience well; I certainly do.
Out of nowhere, we are suddenly overcome with anxiety, panic, and distress. The edges of our visual field blur, while our fingertips and toes may begin to tingle. Heat rises up the neck, and the throat becomes dry. Your thoughts slow down like traffic on a congested highway — too many try to go everywhere for any to get anywhere. Your mouth opens and you hear your voicing saying words, perhaps words that don't match your normal character or personality.
Or perhaps you've experienced the other end of the spectrum. Your energy level suddenly collapses. Rather than a congested highway, your mind is more like a ghost town, deadly silent. There's a drop in your chest all the way down into your stomach, and it pulls your shoulders downward into a slump. Perhaps your vision dims. Perhaps your ears begin to ring. Perhaps you actually can't even remember what happens next.
These experiences happen when our nervous systems are sent into a threat response. This could be the result of a specific traumatic event, a series of traumas, or because in our developmental process we didn't really have the capacity for self-regulation instilled within us.
What needs to happen in moments like these is a return to our bodies. We need to be able shift out of this dysregulated, disintegrated state back to regulation and integration. There are skills you can learn, specific tools you can use, to accomplish this process!
In this webinar, I'll share the neuroscience of what we call "triggers." I'll help you learn to recognize your triggers and better anticipate them. And finally, I'll teach you some of my very favorite ground techniques that I have shared for years with my own clients.
You or someone you know needs the webinar. These tools can be lifesavers, helping us to avoid further wear and tear on our nervous systems and instead learn to shift to states of healing and serenity.
I hope you'll join me!
